Cruising in boats

Led Bulb

Hi all,

I have an Aqua Signal Series 20 masthead light. It uses a small Halogen
Bulb 12V/5W. I would like to replace that with a led bulb. Anyone knows
where to get one of these?

Thanks,

Jeannette

Creative ways to get something for nothing.

You’ve probably read about my battery scam and my printer cartridge
scam. Here’s another couple of good ones.

This scam is called price arbitrage. It works like this. You go to a
retail store like Wal Mart and you buy a nice watch, for example, that
costs a hundred bucks. You go back a day later and buy one that looks
pretty much like the first but only costs fifty bucks. You put the fifty
dollar watch into the 100 dollar watch packaging and receipt and return
it for a full refund in the time allotted. You get 100 dollars back so
you got the 100 dollar watch for only fifty bucks. You can do this with
all sorts of items.

You can do this at the liquor store too. Buy a big bottle of premium
rum. Take it home and empty the premium rum into another container and
then fill the original bottle up with the cheapest rum you can buy. Then
screw the cap back on and return it with the receipt. Tell the clerk
that you’re bringing it back because when you got it home you noticed
the metal seal on the cap had been broken. Tell them you don’t want your
money back, you just would like to exchange it for a sealed bottle for
safety reasons.

You’ll get a free bottle of premium rum or more accurately premium rum
for the price of cheap rum. I’ve been working this scam for years. The
only problem is you can’t keep doing it to the same store. You can get
by with it maybe once or twice a year.

roasting green coffee beans

Some sailors prefer to carry green coffee beans on board and roast them as
need it.
I wonder what is the best method to roast the beans on a sailboat?

MarineMax service

I recently brought mt boat into their Wrightsville Beach, SC facility
for repair. Their tech misdiagnosed the problem and replaced all my
fuel filters instead of finding the one bad fuel injector. Then they
wanted to rebuild or replace all the injectors and the injector pump,
so I pulled out and found someone else. What’s interesting is the
letter I got from their service advisor after I complained about
spending over $200 and not having my boat fixed. He may not be much of
a service advisor, but he sure has a future in customer relations

"I apologize that you are not satisfied with the service you received
at Marinemax.  I believe that you are not up set with the service you
received but instead what the service cost you.  I hope that you think
back to our conversation on the dock.  I never told you that all of
your injectors need to be replaced.  I told you that you had two
injectors that where clogged and that we could have them rebuilt or
replaced, however I suggested to you that you rebuild or replace all
of the fuel injectors.  I also suggested that you rebuild or replace
your fuel pump. If you remember when I finished explaining the problem
to you, I told you that I would give you a little time to think about
what course of action you wanted to take.  I also offered to put you
on my dock for the night at no charge.

It is in poor character that you place an entry on the internet
giving partial details of what actually occurred.  My tech also had
other boats to take care of and placed you at the top so that you
could continue your voyage.  While I understand your complaint and
frustration, I believe that direction you are venting your frustration
is in the wrong direction.

As a fellow police officer I would expect that a retired police
officer would not jeopardize his integrity the way you have.  It is
your choice to bad mouth MarineMax, the service advisor, and tech;
however I would think you would at least tell the truth.  I know that
you are familiar with slander, and your dictation of the events that
occurred is just that, slander.  Mr. XXXXX I hope that you will take
the time to learn your preventive maintenance schedule and follow it,
it will save you a tremendous amount of time, and money.

Mr. XXXXX, I also hope that your further posting paint the entire
truth.  When you begin attacking honesty and integrity, search hard
and try to tell the truth.  In your attempts to attack Marinemax, and
its employees, you are the one who lost out.  I hope if the truth
finds its way on to your blogs, you have time left to repair what it
took a life time to build, HONESTY & INTEGRITY.  GOOD LUCK IN YOUR
JOURNEY.

Right of way?

Now I know how the large commercial operators must feel some times.

I was motoring at five knots when a jet ski came roaring across my bow from
starboard at about full speed for those things.  As he went by at 30 knots,
he screamed, "You %$#@* (reproductive reference) (feminine hygine
reference), I had the right of way!

Huh. Who ever heard of a jet ski operator even knowing that there was such a
thing?   Our speed disparity was such that any course or speed alteration I
could have made wouldn’t have significantly altered my status as an
essentially stationary object.  His course was dead straight and the passing
distance wasn’t any less than is typical for these buzz  bombs.

Nice to know that one of these bozos has read a boating book though.

SuperSeal Duct Butter

SuperSeal Duct Butter is a good thing to carry on board your sailboat.

http://news.thomasnet.com/fullstory/15526/1

Buy a couple cans and, at the time of purchase, also buy about 20 feet
of plastic tubing that will fit the nozzle on the can.

When some obnoxious clown anchors right on top of you and runs his motor
or generator all night keeping you awake with noise and fumes just break
it out a can and cut off about five feet of the tubing and attach it to
the nozzle. Then the first time the obnoxious boat crew dinghies ashore,
put on your fins and mask and discretely slip over the side. Snorkel
over to the exhaust thru-hull and slide the tubing three or four feet up
into the exhaust pipe. Then squirt a good dollop in but not enough so it
starts coming out where it can be seen. Withdraw and discard the tubing
and return to your boat.

Then sit and laugh when the assholes come back and try to start that
noisy, smelly motor or generator. Bwahahahahahhahahahhahahaha!  They’ll
play hell trying to figure out why they motor won’t run. You can wave
goodbye when SeaTow hauls their sorry asses off.

Crew flights

Hi, Thanks all for being a great source of wisdom. I have a question
about organising flights when crewing for a sailing vessel cruising
long distance without definite destinations or timescale. Apology if
it is a stupid question to some…

To get into a country one usually needs to show return tickets. Say,
if I travel from Australia to join a boat in Miami, after cruising for
6-12 months or whatever I could end up in Italy or New Zealand etc. Do
I change/refund ticket (which probably means it needs to be a much
more expensive open ticket?) or do I fly back to Miami with a one-way
ticket and face a possible refusal of entry because it is not a
straight-forward return ticket? In the latter case of flying back to
Miami that would be rather stupid if I’m already in NZ so close to
home.

Also when I get to the last destination how do I clear immigration
without a departure ticket to go into town/airport to buy that ticket?
Buy on-line or by phone from the boat (but that’s often not possible)?

>From one accasion organising a one-way ticket into Vanuatu for a sail

back, it was a tedious and long drawn out affair chasing up the
authority for a letter to be allowed in with a one-way ticket, despite
it being a formally organised inter-country group event with all the
letters to support the application. So this time doing it as one
person I am not too hopeful of a smooth or even successful and timely
transaction. I would very much appreciate your advice and tall or
short tales.

Thinking about it now, this would apply to skippers flying to buy/pick-
up a boat to sail away to undefined destinations too.

Many Thanks
