I want to crew

My name is Jeff, I’m 34, I have a degree in nursing and I’m a certified
mechanic. I have sailed small boats all my like but I have no big boat
experience. I’m looking for some good experience so I can help sail my
parents boat (Tiberon 37) around the world with them after they retire. If
interested e-mail me at RN4…@aol.com

Cruising in Honduras – Connections from Roatan?

Hello all!

I’m just about to leave Friday night to join my Dad on his Allied
Mistress 39 in the Carribean. I’m meeting him in Aruba. The trip in
general has been planned for a long time. He started last November from
New York. But he called me this morning from Aruba and said the trade
winds had started to really honk. Original plans had been to sail to San
Andres (approx. 800 naut. mi.) but this is quite a bit south. I guess
this time of year the trades can have a decent amount of north component,
making it diffucult to get up the coast of Nicaragua. So he wants to
change the plans and sail straight on to the Bay Islands of Honduras
(approx. 1100 naut. mi.). He has a conservative streak in him for this
kind of thing. He hates sailing close hauled. But I’m all fired up at the
moment from reading Beaglehole’s biography of Captain James Cook. What a
navigator! Anyway, I’ve been at the travel agent this morning trying to
change my plans. The closest thing I could get from them was a flight out
of San Pedro Sula. What I need information on is getting from Roatan in
the Bay Islands to San Pedro Sula. The local airlines, Taca and Lacsa, do
not serve it. Apparently the correct airlines is Islena, but neither Taca
nor Lacsa had their phone number. I may be doubly jinxed anyway because I
don’t speak Spanish. If anyone has any experience with Islena I’d really
like to hear about it. Or if anyone has experience with Roatan, or
getting into / outof that area, I could be very helpful. I guess I feel a
little unsettled about such a last minute change in my plans, even just
some words of encouragement would help :-) I may just have to show up at
the airport in Roatan and see if I can hitch a ride.

Thanks a lot!

-Geoff

Flika

I am trying to obtain a reference to a 20 foot boat called Flika.  Somewhere I
have read about this vessel but have lost the reference.  If anyone has read
about this boat, I would appreciate knowing the reference.

Thanks,
Graham

By boat to Hawaii, South Seas, SE Asia???

I am interested in sailing from the West Coast of North America
to Hawaii and on to the South Seas and to Southeast Asia and
ultimately India.  Could take several years i’d guess.  No rush.

My style is "tramp steamer" or some such … backpacker
… ten months in Mexico & Guatemala
… lived and crewed on boats in the Florida Keys
and the Bahamas for several years.
[ie, classification: vagabond; got some $$$ though.]

I don’t much care for air transport.
But BOATS??  For sure.
   [>luxury liners?  not hardly.<]

Anyone have the experience of getting to Hawai’i by boat??
… i’d especially like to leave from Central America.

Anyone know about boats out from Hawai’i to the South Seas?

And how about in the South Seas?
Pretty easy to island hop by boat??

Anyone with information or experience to share
Or ideas on where else I might search
I would be most graciously appreciative of your
 correspondence.

Whales & Sails – course in grey whales

The Coastal Ecosystems Research Foundation is a registered Canadian
charitable organisation, offering seven-day courses in marine mammal
research techniques. Courses are open to the general public – no
previous experience necessary. Research is focused this year on the feeding
behaviour, movements, and abundance of grey whales, Pacific white-sided
dolphins, killer whales and humpback whales, off Cape Caution, BC, Canada.
Courses are taught from a 40′ sailboat, sea-kayaks, and from shore.
Participants are incorporated directly into the research team for the
duration of the course, and have the opportunity to learn techniques first-
hand from working biologists. In addition to the field research techniques,
the course also includes instruction and hands-on experience in sailing or
sea-kayaking. Course cost includes tuition, all meals, return transportation
from Port Hardy to the base camp, and tent accomodation.

Cost: $1400 (CAD) $1075 (USD)
       (Student prices available some dates)
       (call/email for information about kayaking)

Sail Selection on Small Cruisers

Partly on the strentgh of comments I have received out of this fourm,
I’ve found a nice 1992 25′ Seaward which I expect is going to do a
good job meeting my goals of shallow draft, trailerablity and big
water capability.   As part of the deal, It looks like I can get some
significant savings on sails.

The boat comes with a 110% Jib and Single Reef Mainsail (264 sq ft).
I am looking at replacing the Main with a Harken "00" small boat
roller furler which has double grooves for chaging headsails on the
fly, and is flexible for trailering.  I am looking at a 150% (174 sq
ft.) Roller Furling Genoa as the primary headsail and a 165%
Asymetric Cruising Spinnaker (393 sq. ft) as a suppliment.   The
single reefed main is in excellent shape and would stay in service.
I’ve also thought of recutting the existing headsail down to a smaller
size for storm use but don’t know if the fabric would be sturdy
enough.

I’m wondering what others with more experience think of this
arragement, or what other selections make sense, remembering that I
don’t want to fill the boat with sails only.

As a follow on, are the #8 non-self tailing winches adequate, or would
I be better served with some #16 self tailers for a middle aged couple
as crew.

Thanks for your help.
