futon for v-berth?

On our previous boat we had a custom fitted HMC innerspring mattress and
loved it. but on our current sailboat (Dana 24) there is not enough leg room
in the forward part of the v-berth to accommodate a 7" mattress. Therefore
was thinking that perhaps a 4" futon might be a better choices than the
foam mattress we currently have.

I read a "How to" in Cruising World where a couple cut a futon to fit their
v-berth. I would assume however there are companies that would make them to
spec on request.

I know futons come is all sorts of configurations and frankly don’t no which
is best. I hear that all cotton is prone to mildew (we are in fresh water)

Would appreciate any suggestions and recommendations.

War on Terror

www.commondreams.org/views03/1231-04.htm

Can this happen to a US boater with a crew/passengers?
Re-entering a USA port at the "wrong time" when the alert has become orange?
A rhetorical question?

Zodiac Dingy ( model 310 )

Hi All:

Please reply to me at cabo…@hotmail.com because I’m
using the Public Library’s facilities to post this message.

I was on my way down the ICW last month with my dingy on the
davits – got a little too much wind after a heavy rain, the
dingy was a little under-inflated. The combination of the
above caused the floor-board to which the dsvit connected
to pull out of the dingy.

I lost the most forward of the five floor-boards along with
two of the H channels that re-inforce the floor-boards.

I’m presently in Beaufort NC and I’m wondering if someone
wil e-mail me the dimensions of that first section so I can
get one made here, or is there a supplier for these items.

SEA-235 SSB Tuner Problem

I just got down to my boat on the Rio Dulce in Guatemala and found
that
my SEA-235 SSB tuner isn’t tuning.  The tuner should automatically
tune
after switching frequencies and transmitting.  Also, by grounding the
Demand Tune (DMD TUN) signal wire, the tuner should tune.  This is
accomplished by pressing the Function (FNC) key while pressing PTT.
When I do so, I see the demand tune signal drop, but no tuning takes
place.  I either
get NO TUNE displayed on the transmitter display or I get a very high
SWR (7 to 8+)

The tuner correctly runs through its initialization as shown by the
configuration of the tuner relays after powering up.  I’ve carefully
cleaned and checked all of the connections and my ground connections
are
bright copper.

I had this problem once before, but it mysteriously cleared up just as
it appeared.  On past occassions I’ve heard the tuner relays
chattering while
transmitting.  This also comes and goes.  I’ve corresponded with SEA
about this and have shipped the radio back to them, but they found
nothing with the radio.

I can receive and transmit, and I’ve been told that my signal is
clean,
but weak as I’m at low power.  I can send and receive e-mail via
SailMail reasonably well (the propagation on the Rio Dulce is always a
problem).

What I’d like to know is what other tests can I run to diagnose the
problem.  Could it be the antennae?  Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.  Just remember that I’m in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks, Geoff

Problem water pump Yanmar 2GM

Hello all,

I recently did a standard maintenance replacement of a raw water impeller
on a Yanmar 2GM diesel. Everything seemed straightfoward, part for part,
no leakage, everything went back together straight away and test runs at
the dock were nominal.

However, during a move to a new slip the engine alarm went off. A
subsequent check revealed nothing. Took the boat out and ran the engine
for a good hour and there were no issues. The second time out the engine
alarm went off again after about the same duration of running time as the
incident during the move to the new slip.

This time there was no curing it. I dismantled everything upstream and
downstream of the water pump and it appears there is no flow through the
water pump even though everything appears to be functioning exactly as
it’s supposed to. The impeller is fine, the belt tension and pulley
function are fine and there are no blockages from the through-hull to its
egress.

The boat is a 1989 S2.

I am stumped. Any suggestions would be infinitely appreciated.

Thanks,
