I have one and it works pretty well.  I have revived a few dead
batteries with it but there is a limit to everything.

Raymarine ST4000 wheelpilot/scratchy noise

Hi,
I have a brand new ST4000 wheelpilot on a 35ft sailboat.  When I move
the wheel (autopilot not engaged), the unit makes a scratchy/squeaky
noise going through certain wheel positions  as if something is
dragging). It doesn’t really affect steering ability and the noise is
not very loud, but it is a bit annoying and does have a bit of a "cheap
plastic" feel to it.  The dealer who installed the unit says that this
is normal for this unit? I don’t have a comparison. Am I too picky?
Opinions? Suggestions.

Thanks
Ax

Colours used in colour charts – a warning!
These colours are indicative only.
Although care is taken to match colours as accurately as possible,
rendering them to the web leads to a loss of colour that does not
allow exact colour reproduction. It also causes a stippling effect – a
little like the texture of orange peel.

Mast rebuild\hardware questions

Hi,
I’m in the process of completely refurbishing\rebuilding my boats
masts. Looking for some thoughts on the following.

I’m replacing the wire halyard winches with 20std winches and spectra
halyards. The only winch model I could find that will fit the existing
pfd is a two speed. Are these commonly used for halyard winches?

Also the original sheave boxes on the mast were made up of two sheaves
with the wire running between them. These don’t seem to exist anymore.
Can I assume that single sheave boxes will be o.k, exit angle not too
shallow to cause chafe?

I also need to replace the cheek blocks for my boom reefing. In the
larger block sizes that I require there are no models with curved bases
or adaptor plates to match the boom profile. Why is this, and any
suggestions on options. Reefing is external.

And lastly on the stripped back spars where some of the stainless
screw/bolt heads have sheared and left the shaft behind I’m intending
to extract or drill them out and epoxy the holes. Mast will be 2
packed. Do I need to do this, can I just grind them flush or would
corrosion still be a problem?

And lastly – fill no longer required rivet holes in the mast with epoxy
bog or put a rivet with zinc chromate in these holes?

Thanks in advance

Olive wants to go to the Caribbean !

Olive (her last name actually means olive tree :-) wants to
sail to the Caribbean before crossing the Pacific. So maybe
we’re going to do this in 2007.

Should we plan on spending at least a year for this trip ?
How about 4 months to get from California to the Caribbean,
4 months in the Caribbean (January to April) and 4 months
(or longer) to get back ?

Bareboat Charter Tipping

I’ve chartered two sail boats in the last four months.  In one case
there seemed to be no one who was angling for a tip.  In the second
case, both the briefer and the boat cleaner seemed to think I might be
interested in leaving them with a gratuity.  In the last several years
of chartering and crusing I’ve never tipped people at the charter
operations.  Execution at some has been better than others, but I never
felt like anyone did something other than what was appropriate for the
situation.

Comments anyone?

Wooden rudder surprise

Hi,

After stripping and sanding all of my bottom paint and barrier coat
off, I was surprised to find that the boat has a wooden rudder (1986
Jeanneau Espace 990)

It’s a very strong and well made design, but the teredos have gotten
into the wood in the areas between the rudder post and the skeg.  The
damage is not catastrophic, but it will need to be dropped, fixed and
remounted.

My loose plan is to drop the rudder, dry it out, fix the damage with
epoxy/filler, glass in the entire rudder.  I will have to plane away
some of the leading edge, behind the rudder skeg, to accommodate the
thickness of the glass.

Question 1 – What is the best/fastest way to dry out the rudder?  I’m
thinking of a dehumidifier in a small bathroom for a few days or a
week.

Question 2 – How would you go about fixing the compromised areas around
the rudder post?

Question 3 – Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Mike.

NE Ropes 3 Premium strand

OK, this is probably going to bring down the wrath of some self appointed
Usenet police but I have been around r.b.c long enough to ask.

After receiving a number of requests I am thinking about expanding my line
to include rode along with my anchors.  They will be New England Premium 3
strand and ACCO high test chain.  I can move a few of drums of chain fairly
easily.  My problem is I have to buy almost a mile of rope which makes me a
bit nervous.

Any of you guys interested in a few hundred feet of 5/8 or 3/4 3 strand at a
bit under full spool prices?
