How to measure an ATS

Hello NG-members,

I’m considering an ATS and I’m trying to define the right measurements,
particularly the luff-length.
Are there any rules of thumb that apply here?

What luff-length is appropriate with a forestay-length of 20 meters?

What is the difference in height (re the luff-sheet-eye) between
sailing the ATS a) downwind and b) slightly upwind ?

Thanks and fair winds,

Len.

DryTop gear

Hello all,

First post here.

I am trying to find a drytop, like kayakers use (that has latex neck and
wrist seals) BUT that also has a latex abdomen/waist seal.Anybody out there
know of a manufacturer. Seems like all i can find is those with the upper
seals.

Thanks

a boat on which to live and to cruise (coastal cruising with some
Carribbean or Pac Northwest).  We’re looking for reaources for
researching options, needs and the kinds of boats that would fit our needs.

I’m requesting help in identifying these resources, preferably onlline,
that we coould use to figure out what fits our needs and budget.

Thanks in advance.

Interactive Cruising Guide

Hi newsgoup,

maybe it is interesting for someone: the international version of
SkipperGuide, a interactive, online cruising guide just started here:

   http://www.skipperguide.com

It is a cruising guide based on the wikipedia-technology. Everybody can
contribute and profit from other contributions. The idea is to build up
an information pool about cruising waters and marinas of the
consolidated knowledge of many different users, combined with
recommendations from other skippers and touristic tips.

This site is free, open for everyone, and non-commercial. The
contributions are published under the Free Documentation License.

What do you think about it? I’m very interested in your feedback and
your suggestions.

At the moment we are looking for people that have fun to support and
build up this project from the beginning. I’ve just started to
translate some articles from the german counterpart (South of Norway is
finished so far). But there are still many open ends :-)
If you know some waters or marinas somewhere in the world, feel free to
leave some notes about it. But also ideas for an efficient navigation
structure, constructive discussions, small corrections etc are very
welcome.

I’m pretty sure, that this service can become an useful addition to
existing cruising guides. The german site already shows a good coverage
of various areas with high quality informations and some really good
tips for the next sailing trip.

Regards,

    Peter

Nicholson 32 mast

I’ve searched the ‘net and cannot find the exact length of the mast on
a Nicholson 32, from keel to masthead. I’m rerigging a hurricane boat
and am looking for a replacement mast as near to the original as
possible. The boat is an MK X, but I understand the standing rigging
never changed on the various models. Anyone happen to have access to
this spec? Thanks.

Now THIS is the final sail of the season!

Managed to squeeze in one more short sail today. There is also a plug
for our sailmaker. It was slow going, but winds came up nicely later
on. Haul out is in a couple of days…and so ends our first season with
the 35s5.

exp with mob-alerts and direction finders ?

Hi all,

Anyone here familiar with mob-alerts and direction finders?
I saw this one:
http://www.landfallnavigation.com/seamarshall.html
I’d like to know if the (rather affordable) handheld will do the job
in heavy weather. I have doubts re the question if the waveheight
forces me to place an antenna up in the mast for succesfull
retrieval. Short periods of reception when the unlucky crewmember is
on the top of the waves could suffice.
I’ll ask the manufacturer but for the obvious reason I value
cruisers experiences many times more.

Any experiences / other products / suggestions ?

Anyone ever did a Mob-operation in real life? What method did you
use / what did you learn the hard way?
When I read these magazines I tend to think they are about mob
situations in rather calm weather.

Fair winds, Len.
